Plot summary
In Los Angeles in 1970, a social worker at a welfare office notices a girl, Katie Standon, who looks about seven but is thirteen. Katie has been kept in a single room without human contact since she was a baby. She is taken to Children's Hospital, and doctors and psycholinguists form a team to help her learn to speak and deal with other people. Katie goes to live with Dr. Norman Glazer and his family, who work on her hygiene, vocabulary and sign language. Sandra Tannen, a graduate student at the University of California, Los Angeles, is among those who put Katie's welfare first, while special education teacher Judy Bingham speaks about the fame the case could bring her. Katie's mother, Louise, and her husband Wes are arrested over the conditions Katie was kept in.
