Plot summary
Beverly Moody is twelve and lives in Spokane, Washington, in the closing months of 1999. Her grandmother Gail, a mail carrier, brought her up after Beverly's parents died. Beverly was two years old when a car crash killed them, and both were still teenagers. Gail finds it painful to speak about her daughter Kim, so Beverly's questions about her go unanswered. Two boys at school bully her. She finds the mixtape her parents made, Love Riot, and her Walkman eats it. She decides to track down every song on it to find out what her parents were like. A reluctant record store owner called Anti records the first track for her and tells her that the order of the songs and the gaps between them carry a message.
