Plot summary
Dorey Walker is the director of special events at Cole's department store. Before the Thanksgiving Day parade, she fires Tony Falacchi, the store's Santa, because he is drunk, and she must find a replacement at once. She spots an elderly man berating Falacchi and asks him to take over; he calls himself Kris Kringle. He does so well in the parade that Cole's hires him as its Santa for the holiday period, and the children who visit him begin to believe he is the true Santa. His habit of sending shoppers to other stores where toys cost less becomes a marketing campaign for Cole's. Dorey's six-year-old daughter Susan has been raised not to believe in Santa Claus. Bryan Bedford, Dorey's boyfriend and neighbor, tries to persuade Susan that Santa is real.

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- The New York City based Macy's department store, which was featured in the original film, declined any involvement with this remake, saying the original stands on its own and could not be improved upon, despite having allowed its name to be used in prior television remakes in 1955, 1959 and 1973.
- The production created the fictitious store Cole's as Macy's replacement, filming the Cole's parade at 77th Street and Central Park West, the starting point of the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade; Gimbels had ceased operations in 1987, so it was replaced by the fictional Shopper's Express.
- According to Richard Attenborough, Mara Wilson's character of Susan Walker was written as a boy in Hughes' initial draft of the screenplay.
