Plot summary
Laura Burney appears to have a happy marriage to Martin, a Boston investment counselor. In private he demands complete control over her, and when that order breaks he turns violent, then apologizes with flowers and gifts. Martin believes Laura cannot swim, so when a neighbor invites them sailing and a storm hits, she seems to go overboard and the Coast Guard finds nothing. Laura had secretly learned to swim and planned her escape. She reaches shore, cuts her hair, gets rid of her wedding ring and takes a bus. She settles in Cedar Falls, Iowa, as Sara Waters, renting a house and finding work so she can live near her blind mother, Chloe, whom she had told Martin was dead. Her neighbor Ben Woodward, a drama teacher at a local college, is drawn to her.
