A first
In 2004, Gunn wrote the screenplays for the Dawn of the Dead remake and the sequel Scooby-Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed. Those two films made him the first screenwriter whose movies topped the box office in back-to-back weeks.
First role
Gunn began his career at Troma Entertainment in 1996, co-writing Tromeo and Juliet and learning screenwriting, producing, location scouting, directing actors, distribution, and poster art from mentor Lloyd Kaufman.
A role that slipped away
While getting Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 ready, Warner Bros. asked Gunn to direct a Batman movie for the DC Extended Universe, but he said no because he was busy with that third Guardians film.
Behind the camera
For the video game Lollipop Chainsaw, Gunn wrote the story. He worked alongside game designer Suda 51 on the project from Grasshopper Manufacture.
Beyond film
While he lived in St. Louis, Gunn started a band called The Icons in 1989 and was its lead vocalist. The group put out the album Mom, We Like It Here on Earth in 1994.
