Diego Abatantuono
Biography
Diego Abatantuono is an Italian actor and comedian. Born in Milan in 1955, he grew up in a Milan suburb and visited the Derby theater from childhood, where his mother worked as a wardrobe maid and his uncle owned the venue. He began there as a lighting technician, then began performing as a comic character called the terruncello, a northerner who keeps a southern accent. He started performing as a comedian in the late 1970s and broke through in the 1980s with popular Italian comedies. His first dramatic role came in 1985 in Pupi Avati's Regalo di Natale, which revealed him as a gifted serious actor. That year he met Gabriele Salvatores, who later directed him in several important films, including the Oscar-winning Mediterraneo (1991). On television, he played a Milanese judge who returns to Puglia to solve crimes in Il giudice Mastrangelo. His work draws on both his northern and southern Italian roots.
