Plot summary

Holly grows up on the Isle of Wight with supportive but stuffy Jewish parents, next door to Marina, whose mother is fixated on her own looks and sexuality and who has a father rarely present. The girls swear a childhood oath of lasting friendship, and Holly becomes the constant in the life of restless, unpredictable Marina, who is determined to try everything. Holly buries herself in books, frustrated by her over-protective mother, and keeps a single secret from her possessive friend: a growing crush on Marina's older brother, Nat. In 1978, Marina talks Holly into attending a party given by Carolyn, Nat's girlfriend, where Marina hopes The Clash will appear. Older kids are there, and Marina tries heroin while Holly refuses.
