Plot summary
Under the wallpaper of their new San Francisco apartment, Nick and Jan Chaney find a message left by an earlier tenant: Maxie Malone lived here. The landlady upstairs, overcome by the sight of it, remembers Maxie as a brash young actress of the 1920s who died in a car crash on the morning of her Hollywood audition. Nick digs up the few minutes of film she left behind. A voice stops him on his way to bed, and Maxie's form half appears before vanishing; he dismisses it as a delusion. The next day Maxie's soul takes over Jan's body, and at a party the couple attend, Jan drinks, dances and flirts with other men.
