Plot summary
John Brennan teaches at a Pittsburgh community college and his wife Lara is serving a life sentence for murdering her boss. Lara claims she bumped into the real suspect in the parking lot, but her fingerprints were on the fire extinguisher used as the weapon, the victim's blood was on her coat and a witness saw her leaving the lot. Three years on, John raises their son Luke alone while appeals fail, and Lara attempts suicide. Convinced of her innocence, John seeks out Damon Pennington, a former inmate who wrote about his seven prison escapes. Over three months he studies the routines of Allegheny County Jail, buys forged documents and a handgun. Then word comes that Lara is to be moved to a high-security state prison within three days.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about The Next Three Days (2010)
Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- Haggis based John's research of prison break-out techniques on his own Internet research on the Church of Scientology, after its San Diego chapter endorsed 2008 California Proposition 8, which revealed the faith's controversies to him and led to him leaving the church.
- Haggis based the lead character on himself: he asked how he would break the woman he loved out of prison, decided the first thing he would do is go on the Internet, and Googled "How to break out of prison."
- Cavayé told The Age about the remake that he was eager "to be a spectator of my own film", adding: "It's a strange feeling. I wrote this story in my very small apartment in Paris. When I saw my name next to Russell Crowe on the net, it was amazing."
