Plot summary
In April 1992, days before the verdict in the Rodney King trial, someone robs a Los Angeles convenience store to get at the office safe, and four people are killed. The case goes to the LAPD's Special Investigations Squad. Sergeant Eldon Perry, known for his temper and his street tactics, and Detective Bobby Keough, his rookie partner, are assigned to work it. Earlier, Perry spoke for Keough at a hearing into Keough's use of deadly force, and Keough was cleared. Their superior, Jack Van Meter, who is Keough's uncle, assigns them the robbery. Assistant Chief Arthur Holland is the squad's lone opponent inside the department. His assistant, Beth Williamson, pulls the records on the two officers.

- James Ellroy wrote the original script back in 1993 with Kurt Russell in mind for the lead, and it took until February 2001 for Russell to sign on, by which time David Ayer had rewritten it for director Ron Shelton.
