Plot summary
Darren and Sinéad, who call each other Pig and Runt, were born in the same hospital nearly at the same time and lived next door to each other in Cork. The two live in a world of their own, making their own rules, and seldom speak to anyone else except to show hostility. The relationship stays platonic until shortly before their seventeenth birthday, when Runt returns the attention of a schoolmate named Marky at the same time that Pig begins to feel something romantic for her. As the birthday approaches, Pig grows more volatile, and he makes his feelings clear to Runt by kissing her.
