Plot summary
Mariah has wanted a dog her whole life, but her father is allergic and her mother likes a clean house, so the answer has always been no. Near Christmas, her grandma brings her to a pet store where she meets Princess, a hypoallergenic poodle, and falls in love. Her father says she can have the dog if she shows she is responsible. He brings home Jack, a scruffy Jack Russell Terrier he says belongs to his brother Reggie. Jack is a handful: he escapes the house, refuses to come back, pees in the hallway, pulls free on walks, and disrupts a choir concert. Mariah's holiday tasks and the family's preparations turn chaotic as she tries to manage him and earn her wish.
