Biography
Mariah Carey is an American singer and songwriter who also works as a record producer and actress, with estimated record sales of more than 220 million. Born in Huntington, New York, she began vocal training under her mother's guidance and later sang backup for Brenda K. Starr. Her 1990 self-titled debut made her a star, and she became the only artist whose first five singles topped the US chart, from Vision of Love through the title track of Emotions (1991). Music Box (1993) and Daydream (1995) brought international success, while Merry Christmas became one of the best-selling holiday albums. After a career decline, The Emancipation of Mimi (2005) marked a comeback and won her Grammy Awards. Her film work includes Glitter (2001), Precious (2009), The Butler (2013), and A Christmas Melody (2015), which she also directed, plus a voice role on American Dad! and a judging stint on American Idol.

Big break
Carey's demo tape reached Columbia Records head Tommy Mottola at a party in December 1988; he listened during his ride home, ordered the driver to turn around, and spent two weeks searching for her before signing her.
First role
On June 5, 1990, Carey gave her first public performance, singing "America the Beautiful" at the 1990 NBA Finals. Her whistle note near the end of the song moved CBS Sports anchor Pat O'Brien to declare, "The palace now has a queen."
Behind the camera
While making Daydream, Carey contributed writing, production, vocals and art direction to Someone's Ugly Daughter, an alternative rock album by the duo Chick. Columbia Records would not release it with her lead vocals, so Clarissa Dane was brought in and her voice was layered over Carey's.

In Japan, Carey's 1998 album #1's sold more than one million copies in its opening week, the only international artist to do so. It also holds the record as the top-selling album by a non-Asian artist there.

In the week of September 25, 2005, Carey made history as the first woman to hold the Hot 100's top two positions, with "We Belong Together" staying at number one and "Shake It Off" climbing to number two.

With "Touch My Body," the lead single from her album, Carey scored her eighteenth number one on the Billboard Hot 100, which the magazine said pushed her past Elvis Presley for the most number one singles by a solo artist. The song also tied her with Presley at 79 weeks at number one.
