Biography
Tom Petty was an American singer, guitarist and songwriter who fronted Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. Raised in Gainesville, Florida, he formed the Heartbreakers with Mike Campbell and Benmont Tench after his earlier band Mudcrutch split. Their third album, Damn the Torpedoes, sold close to two million copies, and the group's hits included Refugee, The Waiting and Don't Come Around Here No More, while his solo records yielded Free Fallin', I Won't Back Down and You Don't Know How It Feels. With Bob Dylan, George Harrison, Roy Orbison and Jeff Lynne he helped start the Traveling Wilburys, and in 2002 he and the Heartbreakers entered the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. He appeared in Made in Heaven (1987), played the Bridge City Mayor in The Postman (1997), voiced Lucky Kleinschmidt on King of the Hill from 2004 to 2009, and was the subject of Peter Bogdanovich's documentary Runnin' Down a Dream (2007).
