Plot summary

Emma Bovary is not yet eighteen when she leaves the convent to marry Charles Bovary, a country doctor chosen for her by her farmer father. The couple settles in Yonville, a small provincial town where Charles tends to patients and Emma passes her days alone, reading or wandering the garden. She wants excitement, passion, status and love. Leon Dupuis, a law clerk, declares his feelings for her and she holds back. The dashing Marquis is more forward, and his attentions give her a glimpse of the life she imagines. From Monsieur Lheureux, the dry-goods dealer, she buys lavish dresses and decorations on credit that the dealer is glad to keep extending.
