Plot summary
After Erica's husband leaves her, Maggie Thompson and her mother move to Franklin, Ohio, where Erica grew up. At her new school, Maggie makes friends with Haley, Darrell, Chaz and Andy. Sue Ann Ellington, a veterinary technician who keeps to herself, anonymously reports the teenagers when they ask her to buy them alcohol, but the police let them go because the officer has history with Andy's father, Ben. Sue Ann then invites the group to drink in her basement. Other students learn about the house and start turning up to party, calling her Ma. As her popularity grows, Sue Ann presses the teenagers to spend time with her, and they grow annoyed.

- Octavia Spencer agreed to star in Ma without reading the script: director Tate Taylor called her from a hallway and asked if she would like to be in a horror film, and she boarded the project on the spot.
- The original script gave the title character no backstory, leaving her a monster no audience member could sympathize with, so the filmmakers made coming up with an authentic backstory for her a priority.
- In an October 2021 Gawker article, writers Olivia Craighead and Sarah Hagi discussed Ma's legacy and their enduring fixation with the film, writing that as Black women it was hard not to empathize and see themselves in the title character.
