Plot summary
Hector P. Valenti is a magician in New York City who keeps getting turned down for a national talent show. In a pet store he finds a baby crocodile that can only sing, and names him Lyle. Hector puts his three-story brownstone up as collateral for a stage act, but Lyle freezes at the premiere and the house is lost. Hector has to move out and leaves Lyle behind. A year and a half later, Joseph and Katie and their son Josh move in. Josh is scared of his new home and has trouble making friends at school until he finds the grown crocodile in the attic. A mugger accosts Josh, and Lyle saves him and sings. Katie and Joseph take to Lyle over shared hobbies, but their downstairs neighbor Alistair Grumps has no patience for the noise.

- Lyle's motion capture was performed by Ben Palacios using Xsens equipment, with Rudie Bolton playing the young Lyle, and the effects work also used Unreal Engine and IClone Motion Live.
- Choreographer Shannon Holtzapffel drew on classic musical theater for the film's dance numbers and built Hector P. Valenti's movement around Javier Bardem's strengths, while Lyle's dancing was developed through motion capture.
- Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, the film's songwriters, executive producers Benj Pasek and Justin Paul along with Ari Afsar, Emily Gardner Xu Hall, Mark Sonnenblick and Joriah Kwamé, wrote the original songs remotely over Google Docs and Zoom.
