Plot summary
Peter and Amy adopted their son Luce from war-torn Eritrea, and at his high school he is a celebrated athlete and public speaker, admired by classmates and by his parents. He resents his history teacher, Harriet Wilson, who had his friend DeShaun removed from the running team after she found marijuana in his locker. Alarmed, Harriet shows Amy an essay in which Luce writes about the revolutionary Frantz Fanon and argues that colonial rule can be overcome through violence. She also tells her that illegal fireworks turned up in his locker. Amy and Peter choose to say nothing to him about either discovery.
