Plot summary

A girl named Kennedy Hansen grows up in Utah with her parents, her younger sister Anna and her brother Beau. She rides in her father's pickup and plays soccer, where she shows kindness to a girl from another team who has bullied her. Nine years later she still plays soccer, and a fall during a game does not trouble her. Her mother gets a call when Kennedy is seriously hurt. Doctors ask whether someone has struck her, because her injuries suggest it, and her parents say no. One appointment follows another, and then her parents are told the diagnosis: juvenile Batten disease. It will take her sight and her motor skills and cause seizures.
