Plot summary

Lina Emerson is seventeen and headed to MIT in the fall, but first she spends the summer in Rome, the trip her mother Hadley wanted for her. Her best friend Addie wanted to come, but Lina travels alone to honor her mother's last wish and stays with Francesca, a friend of her mother. Francesca gives her the diary Hadley kept during her own summer in Italy at the same age, which describes Hadley's romance with a man she called X. Lina also meets Howard, another old friend of her mother, and his student Lorenzo, and in the city she meets Alessandro, called Ale, who will start school in Boston in the fall. Ale invites her to an opera fundraiser his parents are hosting, and Francesca dresses her for the evening.
