Plot summary
Middle age finds Lousy Carter teaching literature at a college and drawing at an animated version of a Nabokov novel he cannot finish. He was acclaimed as an animator when he was young, and his manner now is cantankerous. He spends part of his week with students reading The Great Gatsby, and he is sleeping with the wife of his closest friend. A visit to a doctor brings news of a terminal illness and a prognosis of six months. He keeps the diagnosis to himself, telling neither family nor anyone close to him, and carries on with his classes, his drawing and the failed relationships he already has.
