Andrew Bujalski
Biography
Andrew Bujalski is an American filmmaker, screenwriter, and actor whose films are often classified as mumblecore, and he has been called the godfather of that movement. He grew up in Newton, Massachusetts, and studied film at Harvard, where the Belgian filmmaker Chantal Akerman served as his thesis advisor. His first feature, Funny Ha Ha (2003), was followed by Mutual Appreciation (2005); he wrote both screenplays and took major acting roles in each. He also acted in and helped write Joe Swanberg's Hannah Takes the Stairs (2007). His later features include Beeswax (2009) and Computer Chess (2013), a period piece set at a 1980 computer programming tournament that won the Alfred Sloan Feature Film Prize at Sundance. His other honors include a Sidewalk Moving Picture Festival best director award and a Newport International Film Festival best screenplay prize.
