Plot summary
A collapsed partnership leaves architect Stephen Booker short of work and short of money. Mike Daniels wants the main vault of a large London bank, a chamber the bank believes cannot be breached, and he has found that it lies a short distance from a main sewer. He needs someone who can pinpoint the exact spot underground, and Booker's training fits. Daniels approaches him; Booker turns him down. With his bank manager pressing and his wife Dinah launching a business of her own, Booker takes the job on the condition that no one is to be hurt. Gardner rents an office nearby to keep watch.
