Plot summary
In Sydney, P.J. and Goose ride BMX bikes and perform tricks. They meet Judy, who collects trolleys at Warringah Mall during the school holidays to earn money for a bike of her own; a crash into the trolleys costs her the job. The three take Goose's father's runabout onto the harbor to gather cockles to sell, hoping to pay for repairs to their bikes and for one for Judy. On the water they find a crate of police-band walkie-talkies that a gang of robbers plans to use to follow police traffic during a payroll robbery. The kids take the crate, and Whitey and Moustache set out to collect it.

- Nicole Kidman sprained her ankle while making BMX Bandits, and because no female stunt double who resembled her could be found, her bike stunts were ridden by an 18-year-old man in a wig.
- BMX Bandits shot for 41 days, longer than a normal production, because child labor restrictions applied to a cast in which many performers were under 16.
- The film was first to be written and directed by Russell Hagg, with nine-year-old characters, but he could not raise the money; producer Tom Broadbridge then had Patrick Edgeworth rewrite the script around teenagers.
- Nicole Kidman's work in BMX Bandits led to her being cast in the television series Five Mile Creek, several episodes of which were directed by Brian Trenchard-Smith.
- The Mitchell and Webb Look parodied BMX Bandits in its recurring "Angel Summoner and BMX Bandit" sketches, and the Scottish indie rock band BMX Bandits took their name from the film.
