Plot summary
Colt Dunton works on his own organic pesticide at a farm near Prairie, Idaho, after leaving the genetics firm run by Vicky's father, Russ Snow, and his partner Gary Wolf, who have bred a new locust that eats the insects destroying crops. A jammed vent lets the swarm out, and the insects, which strip flesh from anything they meet, reach the farmland. Colt finds one of the dead insects after a farm is hit. Vicky, who works at the local hospital, hears the same reports of slaughtered livestock, and together they examine the remains and identify the locust. When a swarm attacks a family at a picnic, the survivor is carried to the hospital, and a specimen taken from a trooper's car shows the insects are breeding. Colt and Vicky join USDA agent Greg Ballard to hunt the nest.
