Plot summary
Brian Jardine's father has died, and Brian moves his wife Kathy and their son Jake into the Brooklyn apartment the family has inherited. A dress shop occupies the ground floor, run by Leonor Calvelli, whose son Tony is Jake's age. Jake is quiet and spends his time sketching, while Tony talks easily and takes acting classes, hoping for a place at LaGuardia High School; Jake decides he wants the same school for his painting. The two boys become close, skating around the borough and going to a teen rave. Then the Jardines find that Brian's father charged Leonor a very low rent. With Brian's acting work stalled and Kathy supporting the household, they tell Leonor the rent must triple, still under market value for the neighborhood. Leonor asks Brian to be generous.
