Plot summary
A Star Command exploration vessel detours to T'Kani Prime after picking up signs of life, and Space Ranger Buzz Lightyear, his commanding officer Alisha Hawthorne and a new recruit go down to look. Hostile lifeforms drive them back, and during the retreat Buzz damages the ship, wrecking the fuel the crew needs to leave. Marooned, the crew builds a colony while Buzz volunteers as test pilot for the hyperspace fuel crystal that could carry them home. Every flight lasts minutes but costs years on the planet, and Alisha gives him Sox, a robotic cat who works on the fuel's composition.

- Lightyear was banned across much of the Muslim world, including Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Kuwait, Malaysia and the United Arab Emirates, over a same-sex kiss between Uzo Aduba's Alisha Hawthorne and her partner Kiko; China asked for the scene's removal and Disney refused.
- The same-sex kiss was cut from the film in mid-March 2022, then reinstated after then-Disney CEO Bob Chapek's response to Florida's Parental Rights in Education bill and the internal uproar it caused at Disney.
- Because of Lightyear's box-office underperformance, director Angus MacLane and producer Galyn Susman were two of 75 Pixar employees laid off in June 2023.
- Lightyear was the first animated feature film to have its aspect ratio opened up from 2.39:1 to 1.43:1 for select IMAX sequences, and it includes 30 minutes of animation shot with virtual IMAX cameras.
- Producer Galyn Susman said the team never discussed bringing Tim Allen back as the voice of Buzz Lightyear in any capacity, because his voice would have tied the film too closely to Toy Story.
- To design the film's vehicles, director Angus MacLane built various ships out of Lego pieces and pitched them to the designers and artists.
