Plot summary
Giulia, who comes from Naples, works with her husband Paul Blanc in the butcher's shop he runs. Paul also bets on horses. His brother in Argentina sends him sleeping pills, and one of them puts a whole race into his sleep, with the runners finishing in an order he can read. At the café, Giulia boasts about what her husband can do. The men of the track tell her not to back the horses Paul picked, which they call hopeless. News of the pills gets around. The town wants the medicine, and it is no longer made, because the authorities banned it as dangerous.
