Plot summary
During World War II a Jewish man buries two suitcases packed with things he held dear. The war takes his family from him, and afterward, in Antwerp, he keeps digging and studying old maps in search of the suitcases. His daughter Chaya, a modern young woman, finds part-time work as a nanny in the home of a Hasidic family with many children. The mother, overburdened by the household, is why Chaya is taken on, though the father, the family's usual authority, resists her secular manners. Chaya forms a special bond with Simcha, the youngest boy, who is four years old and has not yet begun to speak.
