Plot summary
Marcel writes poetry and plays in Paris and edits a magazine that has no publisher, and when the rent goes unpaid he loses his room. Wandering the city, he comes across Rodolfo, a painter from Albania who has no visa and no money, and the two recognize in each other the same indifference to comfort. A third friend joins them: Schaunard, a post-modernist composer of noise who takes over the room Marcel has given up. The three pool whatever cash they find so that none of them sinks. Rodolfo meets Mimi, a poor French barmaid, and falls in love with her.
