Biography

Bourvil was a comedian, actor and singer who was born in 1917 and grew up in Bourville, Normandy. He left school at 15 to work as a baker, but he already played harmonica, mandoline and cornet in a village band. In 1940, while in the army performing music-hall shows for troops, he adopted the name Andrel, after his idol Fernandel, and later changed it to Bourvil in 1942. He wrote his own songs and became known as a stand-up comic, wearing the costume of a farmer with hair falling on his forehead, a simple but crafty naive. Radio extended his fame after the war. His first screen roles drew on this character. In 1956, Four Bags Full (1956) marked a turning point, revealing his real potential as an actor. His greatest popular successes came under the direction of Gérard Oury. He died in 1970.
