Plot summary
Clyde Shelton lives in Philadelphia with his wife and daughter. One night Rupert Ames and Clarence Darby break into the house. Ames ties Clyde up and gags him, and Darby stabs him in the stomach, then rapes and kills the wife and daughter. Prosecutor Nick Rice takes the case with District Attorney Jonas Cantrell. Unwilling to stake his high conviction rate on thin evidence, Nick offers a bargain: Darby pleads guilty to a reduced charge of third-degree murder and testifies against Ames, who is sentenced to death for felony murder. Clyde pleads with Nick to refuse any deal; Nick takes it anyway. Darby, who will serve three years before parole, thanks Nick and shakes his hand at a press conference while Clyde looks on.
