Plot summary
Rick is a screenwriter in Los Angeles whose career has brought him success but whose life feels hollow. He drifts through the city's mansions and parties, distracted by women and by the pleasures Hollywood offers. Among the people he meets are Della, a rebellious young woman; Tonio, a wealthy libertine; Nancy, his former wife and a physician; Helen, a reserved model; Karen, a stripper who accompanies him on an excursion to Las Vegas; and Elizabeth, a married woman he begins a romance with. He also commiserates with his unstable brother Barry and his elderly father Joseph. An executive named Herb wants him to accept a bigger job in the film industry. Rick and the people around him are identified with tarot cards, his own being the Knight of Cups.

- Terrence Malick used a method he called "torpedoing" on Knight of Cups: a character was thrown into a scene without the other actors' advance knowledge, forcing them to improvise.
- Although a script existed for Knight of Cups, Christian Bale was given no pages from it, while the rest of the cast received only pages of internal and verbal monologue for each shooting day. Bale said he was unclear what the final film would be.
