Plot summary
Jessica Stein is twenty-eight and works as a copy editor at a New York newspaper. Her brother Dan has just become engaged, and their mother Judy, afraid that Jessica will be left on her own, keeps arranging blind dates with men that do not go well. In the women-seeking-women column, Jessica spots a personal ad quoting a line by Rilke that she loves, and she writes back. The ad is from Helen Cooper, an art gallery assistant director who has grown tired of sex with men and, at the urging of her gay friends, has decided to try dating women. Jessica meets her, gets nervous and leaves, and Helen follows and talks her into staying for a drink.
