Plot summary
Edith is a fourteen-year-old Jewish girl in Paris. She and her parents are taken to a concentration camp, and her parents are killed there. Sofia, a political prisoner who is older than Edith, and a doctor at the camp give Edith a different identity. She becomes Nicole Niepas, a non-Jewish woman who has just died. The new name is meant to keep her from the same fate as her parents.

French director Jacques Rivette condemned Gillo Pontecorvo in an article in Cahiers du cinéma for a single shot in Kapò showing Emmanuelle Riva's character electrocuted on the barbed wire of a concentration camp; the criticism hung over Pontecorvo until his dying day.- Gillo Pontecorvo found Franco Solinas's script too melodramatic and nearly broke off their partnership while writing Kapò, before producer Franco Cristaldi intervened.
- Claudia Cardinale was considered for the lead in Kapò before Susan Strasberg, known for playing Anne Frank in the Broadway play The Diary of Anne Frank, was cast.
- Susan Strasberg, cast as the lead, did not speak Italian, so Gillo Pontecorvo had to communicate with her through an interpreter on set.
- Pontecorvo was forced to work with Yugoslav cinematographer Aleksandar Sekulović, whose smooth "Hollywood-style" photography he found inappropriate for the subject, preferring the vérité style of the Italian second unit cameramen.
