Emmanuelle Riva

Biography

Emmanuelle Riva was a French actress who, born Paulette Germaine Riva in Cheniménil and raised in Remiremont, began her career on the stage. After training with Jean Meyer, she was cast by René Dupuy in Arms and the Man. Her film breakthrough came as the unnamed heroine of Alain Resnais's Hiroshima Mon Amour (1959), written by Marguerite Duras, which won her France's Étoile de Cristal and established her as a major talent. She followed it with roles in Kapo (1960), Léon Morin, Priest (1961), and other French and Italian films, and won the Volpi Cup at Venice for Therese (1962). Later she appeared in Three Colors: Blue (1993), Un homme et son chien (2008), and Michael Haneke's Amour (2012), which brought her a European Film Award, a BAFTA, a César, and an Oscar nomination. She returned to the stage in Duras's Savannah Bay.
