Gianni Garko
Biography
Gianni Garko is a Croatian-Italian actor who became a leading man in 1960s Spaghetti Westerns, often billed as John Garko. Born Giovanni Garcovich in Zara, now Zadar, he studied at a drama academy in Rome and took an early role in the Academy Award-nominated drama Kapo (1960), then appeared in sword and sandal pictures before his break in Don Camillo in Moscow (1965). His fame grew with Blood at Sundown in 1966, and he is best known as Sartana, the character he played in If You Meet Sartana Pray for Your Death and three sequels, among them I Am Sartana Your Angel of Death (1969) and Have a Good Funeral, My Friend... Sartana Will Pay (1970). Other westerns include They Call Him Cemetery (1971) and Bad Man's River (1971), and later he worked in gialli, horror and comedies such as Cold Eyes of Fear (1971), The Psychic (1977) and Hercules (1983), plus television and theater.

Big break
In the 1966 Spaghetti Western Blood at Sundown, Garko played an antagonist named El General Sartana, and the role made him a star in Europe.
A role that slipped away
Garko mentioned in an interview that he declined the lead role in Pretty Baby, the 1978 film with Brooke Shields.
First role
Garko took a small but important part in Kapò (1959), a Holocaust drama nominated for an Academy Award and directed by Gillo Pontecorvo. It was his first prominent film role.
Early training
Garko moved to Trieste in 1948 and later to Rome, where he attended the Accademia Nazionale di Arte Drammatica Silvio D'Amico.
