Plot summary
In the days before the invasion of France, Allied Intelligence mounts Operation GAMBIT: the destruction of a bunker that holds the controls of a device built to spread oil over the water off Omaha Beach and set it alight, wrecking the landing craft. A French Resistance group led by a woman known as Denise carries out the preliminary reconnaissance. Three Allied commandos impersonate German officers due to inspect the installation. Captain Jack Murphy drills his paratroopers for the parachute attack on the bunker and grows uneasy that the repeated scouting is giving the surprise away, and that the operation's name, borrowed from chess, may describe his own command as the piece to be given up.
