Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- The film deliberately mixes three genres, western, fantasy and 1950s sci-fi, at the suggestion of executive producer Butch Lukic, who wanted to explore different genres after years working on superhero animation, an idea director Jeff Wamester liked.
- The film's overall story model was inspired by King Kong, which had characters on multiple storylines before converging on the climax. The Western sequences drew on 60s and 70s Spaghetti Westerns, particularly High Plains Drifter, and the fantasy sequences on films such as Conan the Barbarian.
