Trailer

Plot summary

Far from Earth, dynasties of transhuman and alien royalty seed planets and harvest the populations, producing a youth serum that extends the lives of elites elsewhere. When the matriarch of the House of Abrasax dies, her grown children Balem, Kalique and Titus each angle for what she left behind, and Earth is part of the estate. On Earth, Jupiter Jones cleans houses in Chicago, where her mother Aleksa settled after Jupiter's father Maximilian was killed in a robbery. Jupiter wants a telescope, and her cousin Vladie suggests she sell her eggs for money, so she goes to a clinic under her friend Katharine Dunlevy's name. Creatures called Keepers attack her there, and a former soldier, Caine Wise, pulls her out before the staff can kill her.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about Jupiter Ascending (2015)

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.

  • Eddie Redmayne, who was nominated for and won an Oscar the same year for playing Stephen Hawking in The Theory of Everything, drew particular criticism here for a performance judged over-the-top and unintentionally silly, and went on to win a Razzie Award for Worst Supporting Actor for it.
  • An eight-minute pursuit through downtown Chicago, code-named "Fifty-Two Part" by the crew, was the longest sequence in the script and involved some of the film's most difficult stunts; Mila Kunis and Channing Tatum had to film it every day for six months.
  • A rig of six cameras called the Panocam was mounted on a helicopter and covered nearly 180 degrees of the action, letting the directors combine the overlapping footage in post into a camera that swung independently of the helicopter's flying path; other directors have since used the technique.
  • Michael Giacchino recorded all the music before shooting was even finished, calling it "much more freeing" because he was not locked down to specific timings; the Wachowskis first used the approach on Cloud Atlas at co-director Tom Tykwer's recommendation and say they will never again make a movie without recording the music first.
