Paul Bown
Biography
Paul Bown is an English actor who studied drama and theater studies at Crewe and Alsager College, started his professional career in 1980 with the touring Rat Theatre Company and later co-founded Optik Theatre Company, whose London showcase helped launch him. He is best known as the ornithologist Malcolm Stoneway in the Granada sitcom Watching, which ran for seven series, and he played Roger Bones in the CBBC comedy Pirates and Harry Thorpe in the BBC comedy The Last Salute. In 1985 he was Julian Tope in Morons from Outer Space, one of three aliens who become celebrities after crashing on Earth, and he later played Uncle Jim in Jude (1996). He was The Student in the opening episode of Mr. Bean, and his other screen work includes Merseybeat and The Damned United.

First role
Bown started acting professionally in 1980, the year he became a member of the Rat Theatre Company. That company later toured throughout the UK.
Behind the camera
With former college colleagues, Bown started the Optik Theatre Company. A showcase the group later gave at London's Cockpit Theatre was a boost to his career.
Early training
At Stoke Polytechnic, Bown did a foundation course in art, and later he earned a BA in Drama and Theatre Studies at Crewe and Alsager College.
Big break
In 1987, Bown took his breakthrough television part as Malcolm Stoneway, an ornithologist, in Watching. The show was popular with audiences and ran for seven series.
Beyond film
Between 2012 and 2013, Bown appeared in the stage adaptation of The Ladykillers, taking the lead as the Fiery Angel/Professor Marcus. After its initial West End run, the production toured around the UK.
