Plot summary

Jonathan Brock is a scientist and part-time prizefighter. Martha Dennison visits his home and asks him to trace her husband Edward, who set out four years earlier to reach the center of the Earth and never returned. Edward had once given Jonathan a fossil from a mine inside an Alaskan volcano, a mine said to lead down to that region, which Jonathan doubts. Martha offers a fee large enough to clear the debts on his late father's estate and gives him Edward's notes. Abel, Jonathan's nephew and a journalist, asks to come along; his fiancée Emily calls the trip an excuse to put off their wedding. In Sitka, after Abel's wallet is stolen, Sergei joins them, hoping to find his friend Mikael, who went with Edward. Martha says the mine appears only at the equinox.
