Plot summary

John Mulaney begins the show already onstage, with no traditional opening, and talks about how much attention he needs, recalling that as a boy he prayed for a grandparent to die so his classmates would pity him. He apologizes for the grim start and sings a song about how his reputation shifted once he relapsed, then speaks to a fifth grader in the audience and warns the child against repeating anything he describes. Much of the set covers the night of his intervention, which he reached two hours late after buying drugs and getting a haircut at his old workplace. He describes the friends who gathered, the drugs confiscated when he entered rehab, and the doctor he found online who wrote him any prescription he asked for.
