Plot summary
Berta, a Honduran refugee, is a captive of a Los Angeles street gang. Her brother Oscar and her half-brother Emilio break into the house to free her, and Emilio drags Berta away and holds off the police while she runs. She hides under the porch of John Henry, a large, quiet man whose father BJ is against taking her in, and John offers to help. When Emilio reaches the house, he explains that Berta was seized while he was on his way to leave his half-siblings at a shelter. BJ is disgusted by that plan and grows closer to Berta. Berta wants to return to the gang's house to look for Oscar; Emilio insists Oscar is dead.
