Plot summary
Jack Reacher, a former military police commander who now drifts from town to town, helps Major Susan Turner, the officer running his old unit, bring down a corrupt sheriff who traffics people on Army land. Reacher travels to Washington, D.C. to meet her and finds Col. Morgan sitting at her desk: Turner has been arrested on espionage charges, and a hard drive with classified material was seized from her home. Her lawyer, Col. Moorcroft, tells Reacher that she is suspected of involvement in the deaths of two soldiers in Afghanistan, and that Candice Dutton has filed a paternity suit naming him as the father of her teenage daughter Samantha. Reacher approaches the girl in foster care, and she rejects him, while a man watches him from a distance.
