Plot summary
Pat Riley is a job-hopper of indeterminate gender who wants a steady foundation. Pat meets Chris, who is sensitive and caring and whose gender is also never revealed. They fall in love and get engaged. Pat's neighbor Kyle becomes fixated on whether Pat is a man or a woman, and he starts following Pat. Pat's loutish behavior and inability to choose a direction strain the engagement with Chris.

- 20th Century Fox spent six months developing It's Pat, including a script with input from Quentin Tarantino in which Pat is pursued by a relentless suitor, then grew frustrated and put the film into turnaround; Disney and New Line Cinema bid for the rights.
- Pat's androgyny was the idea of Jim Emerson, Julia Sweeney's Groundlings friend and a co-writer of the film, who suggested it for a character then based on annoying co-workers who don't leave you alone.
- Julia Sweeney resisted making a film of Pat because she did not know how the character could last two hours, but 20th Century Fox and the producer were keen, so she and her collaborators wrote the script.
