Camille Paglia
Biography
Camille Paglia is an American academic, social critic, and author. Born in Endicott, New York, she began teaching at Bennington College in 1972 and later took a position at the Philadelphia College of Performing Arts in 1984; that institution became the University of the Arts, where she taught until it closed in 2024. After seven or more publishers declined her book Sexual Personae, Yale University Press released it in 1990, and it became a best seller. She wrote for Salon.com between 1995 and 2001, then again between 2007 and 2009. She also serves on the editorial board of Arion, a classics and humanities journal. In 2005, Foreign Policy and Prospect named her among the top 100 public intellectuals. She made cameo appearances as herself in It's Pat (1994) and The Watermelon Woman (1997).

Behind the camera
In 1998, the British Film Institute asked Paglia to write a book about Alfred Hitchcock's film The Birds, marking the 35th anniversary of its release.
A change of course
In the autumn of 1972, Paglia started teaching at Bennington College, which hired her partly because Harold Bloom recommended her.
