Googie Withers
Biography
Googie Withers began her acting career at the age of 12. She was dancing in the chorus in a West End revue when she was spotted by a Warner Brothers casting director. She went to do a screen test for them at the Riverside Studios and was invited to become an extra. On her first day at the filming of The Girl in the Crowd (1935) she arrived on the set just after Michael Powell had just sacked the second lead, and she was enlisted to play one of the lead roles.

Early training
Withers started acting when she was twelve. She studied at the Italia Conti Academy of Theatre Arts and at Buddy Bradley's dance school, where she learned ballet and tap.
Big break
Withers was a dancer in a West End show when she got work as an extra in Michael Powell's The Girl in the Crowd (1935). On set, a major player had been dismissed, so she was asked to take the leading role, starting a seven year Warner Brothers contract.
A role that slipped away
Producers asked Withers to take the part of the Governor in the Australian version of Within These Walls, which was called Prisoner, but she turned it down and Patsy King was given the role.
Behind the award
In 1955, Withers was the first winner of the British Academy Television Award for Best Actress, taking the inaugural honor.
