Plot summary
Dan Reilly owns a farm in rural Ireland that is failing, and a bio-genetics firm pays him to help with experiments meant to produce faster-growing cattle. Orla, the local vet, is sent by the firm to inspect the herd and confirm the experiment is proceeding as planned. During a palpation she is bitten by an unborn calf and raises her worry with John, the firm's genetic scientist, who pays it no attention. John also tells Dan that a caravan is parked near the farm and reminds him the experiment must stay secret, so Dan asks the Traveller Jamie and his girlfriend Mary to leave by morning. Jamie and Mary came there because Mary's brothers do not accept her Traveller boyfriend. That night, one of the cows labors, and Dan turns to Jamie for help.
