Plot summary
Irena Gut is nineteen and works as a nurse in occupied Poland. She is promoted to housekeeper in the household of Major Eduard Rügemer, a German Army officer. Word comes that the Jewish ghetto is going to be liquidated, and twelve Jewish workers need somewhere to go. Irena chooses the cellar of the Major's house as their hiding place. She keeps the twelve there in the months that follow, relying on her wit and her courage.
